Former Employee Attacks Charity’s Computer Network
Jeffery H. Sloman, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Michael J. Folmar, Acting Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today the arrest of defendant Luis Robert Altamarino.
According to the Indictment filed on August 4, 2009, Altamarino was a former employee of United Way of Miami-Dade ("UWMD"). He was employed as a computer specialist from July to December 2007. On December 24-25, 2008, approximately one year after he left UWMD's employ, Altamarino is alleged to have accessed United Way's network without authorization. He deleted numerous files from their servers, including the contact information of many of UWMD's donors. Altamarino also allegedly disabled UWMD's telephone voice mail system, which prevented callers from leaving messages for UWMD and prevented UWMD employees from accessing their voice mail accounts.
Mr. Sloman commended the investigative efforts of the FBI's Computer Intrusion Squad and Computer Analysis and Response Team (CART). Mr. Sloman would also like to acknowledge the assistance of the United Way of Miami-Dade for cooperating in this investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aurora Fagan.
An Indictment is only an accusation and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
