ADVISORY***
The Federal
Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will be holding a Memorial Service
on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 to mark the 20th Anniversary of what
became known as the Miami Shootout. Special Agent Ben Grogan and
Special Agent Jerry Dove were killed in the line of duty. The media
is welcome and encouraged to attend the ceremony.
The keynote
speaker will be FBI Deputy Director John S. Pistole, the number
two position in the FBI.
On the morning
of April 11, 1986, the FBI bank robbery squad set up a moving surveillance
in South Miami, in an attempt to locate and apprehend two unidentified
white men who were responsible for a series of violent bank and
armored car robberies. Special Agents Grogan and Dove were the first
to spot the robbers' car, a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Florida
license plate NTJ-891. As the others on the surveillance team joined
them, the robbers became aware they were being followed and were
observed loading weapons. A felony car stop was called. Immediately
after the cars came to a rest at the intersection of SW 82nd Avenue
and SW 124th Street, the robbers started shooting. The agents returned
fire and were engaged in an intense gunfight for five minutes. Sadly,
the FBI lost two dedicated Special Agents. Five Special Agents were
wounded: Supervisory Special Agent Gordon McNeill, SA John Hanlon,
SA Richard Manauzzi, SA Ed Mireles, and SA Gil Orrantia. SA Ron
Risner was not injured. The two bank robbers were killed during
the gun battle and identified as William Matix and Michael Platt.
Four of the
agents who were engaged in the confrontation will be present for
the ceremony: SA John Hanlon (retired), SA Richard Manauzzi (retired),
SA Gil Orrantia and SA Ed Mireles.
