Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1203 - Hostage Taking

This statute prohibits the seizing or detaining individuals with threats to kill, injure or to force another person or government organization to be compelled to do or abstain from doing any act, as an explicit or implicit condition for the release of the person detained, or anyone who attempts or conspires to do so.

The taking of hostages is a common occurrence when smuggled aliens are kept in "safe houses" as hostages for repayment fo smuggling fees.

Punishment varies by imprisonment for any term of years or for life, and if the death of any person results, shall be punished by death or life imprisonment.
