This statute prohibits the holding of a person in a condition of involuntary servitude in order to effectuate repayment of a debt. Involuntary servitude is a condition of service obtained or maintained through force, threats of force, or threats of legal coercion tantamount to imprisonment.
Punishment varies from a fine or imprisonment of up to twenty years or both. If death results from the violation of this statute, or if the violation involves kidnaping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse or the attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, the punishment varies from a fine to imprisonment of any term of years or life, or both.
